Career
On August 12, 2013, Burna Boy’s first studio album, L.I.F.E, was released. It was the follow-up to his second mixtape, Burn Identity (2011). 40,000 copies of the record were sold on the first day it was available. Aristokrat Records would later sell its marketing rights to Uba Pacific for ₦10 million. Five singles—”Like to Party,” “Tonight,” “Always Love You,” “Run My Race,” and “Yawa Dey”—were released before the album’s official release. Leriq produced L.I.F.E totally, and a number of artists, including 2face Idibia, M.I, Timaya, Olamide, Reminisce, and Wizkid, made cameo appearances.
Burna Boy and Aristokrat Records parted ways in 2014. Eight months after severing ties with Aristocrat Records, he established the record label Spaceship Entertainment in February 2015. On a Spaceship, Burna Boy’s second studio album, was made available on November 25, 2015. Redemption, a seven-track extended play by him, was made available in September 2016. “Pree Me,” the album’s lead track, had its debut on Noisey.
Burna Boy made an appearance on “Sunshine Riptide,” a tune from American rock band Fall Out Boy’s seventh studio album, Mania, on January 19, 2018. Exactly one week later, on January 26, 2018, he released Outside, his third studio album. Outside, which has been called a mixtape, primarily consists of afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, and road rap. J Hus, Lily Allen, and Mabel make cameo cameos on it. Six singles—”Rock Your Body,” “Streets of Africa,” “Koni Baje,” “Sekkle Down,” “Heaven’s Gate,” and “Ye”—were released in support of Outside. Leriq, Baba Stiltz, Jae 5, Juls, Chopstix, Steel Banglez, Fred Gibson, Phantom, and FTSE were in charge of its production. The album earned favorable reviews and was named the greatest Nigerian album by Pulse Nigeria and Nigerian Entertainment Today as the best Nigerian body of work or album of 2018.
African Giant, Burna Boy’s fourth studio album, was released on July 26, 2019. Six singles were released to support it: “Gbona,” “On the Low,” “Killin Dem,” “Dangote,” “Anybody,” and “Pull Up.” In 2018, he started recording the album, which he later described to Billboard as being his most personal work to date. He had a private listening session in Los Angeles before officially announcing plans to release it in April 2019. On social media, pictures and videos from the listening session were posted. The original track listing for African Giant was 16 tracks. Burna Boy led the African Giant Returns tour, the follow-up to his African Giant tour, to promote the record. “My Money, My Baby,” a song by Burna Boy, was included on the Queen & Slim soundtrack album.
Controversies
Despite seeing his career advance at an incredible rate, Burna Boy has somewhat registered himself into the heart of music lovers as one of the most controversial Nigerian musicians. At a Lagos nightclub on June 8, 2022, two persons are said to have been shot and injured by his armed escorts. The incident, according to the wife of one of the victims, started when she turned down Burna Boy’s invitation to join him in the VIP area of the club. Charges of attempted murder have been brought against five security personnel connected to Burna Boy. While his security personnel were arrested and charged with attempted murder, Burna Boy fled Nigeria that morning to Spain in a bid to avoid getting arrested. Later, the woman charged Burna Boy and his family with attempting to buy the silence of her family with hush money. The club has yet to release the shooting’s CCTV footage.
Burna Boy has also fallen out with a lot of Nigerian musicians, notable among them is Davido whom he claimed Davido’s father bought him fame despite being a terrible singer.
Burna Boy has been regarded as one of the greatest musicians ever to emerge from Nigeria and Africa. However, many consider him to be crude, uncouth and unrefined. He has been associated with cultism and thuggery in the past.
Personal Life
Burna Boy started dating British rapper, Stefflon Don in 2018 but their relationship ended in 2022 after Burna Boy cheated on the British singer, according to speculations. Burna Boy spoke of his relationship with Stefflon Don and how it affected him and almost cost him his life in “Last last”.
