Early Life
Davido was born on November 21, 1992, to Adedeji and Vero Adeleke in Atlanta, Georgia. His father is a Nigerian business magnate, and his late mother was a university lecturer. He attended the British International School in Lagos. Davido studied business administration at Oakwood University prior to relocating to Nigeria. Davido first became interested in music while attending Oakwood University. He purchased musical instruments and began to create rhythms in addition to recording vocal samples. When he began receiving poor marks, he left Oakwood University and moved to London, where he concentrated more of his work on vocals than on producing.
After deciding to enroll at Babcock University in order to honor his father, Davido’s music career was put on hold when he returned to Nigeria in 2011. Davido received a music degree from Babcock in July 2015 after his father financed the school to establish a music department for a single inaugural class.
Career
Davido became well-known in 2011 with the release of “Dami Duro,” the second single off his debut studio album Omo Baba Olowo (2012). This album also contained the hits “Back When” with Naeto C, “Dami Duro,” “All of You,” “Overseas,” “Ekuro,” “Gbon Gbon,” and “Feel Alright” with Ice Prince. Then, Asa Asika served as his first manager.
Davido released the music videos for “Ekuro,” “Gbon Gbo,” and “Feel Alright” to promote the album. His ascent to fame, however, only occurred with the release of his second single, “Dami Duro,” which was a huge hit and provided him the fan base he required to ascend and become one of the most adored Nigerian Afro-pop singers.
Other singles by Davido include “Gobe,” “One of a Kind,” “Skelewu,” “Aye,” “Tchelete (Goodlife”),” “Naughty,” and “Owo Ni Koko.”
His second studio album was started early in 2013, and on February 25, 2013, he released “Gobe,” which was produced by Shizzi, as the album’s lead single. The second and third singles, “One of a Kind” and “Skelewu,” arrived shortly after “Gobe.”
T Spice’s “Aye,” the fourth single from the album, was released on February 2, 2014, and Clarence Peters’ “Aye” video followed a few days later.
Later, on April 30, 2014, Davido’s HKN Music released “Tchelete (Goodlife),” the fifth song from the upcoming album, which features the South African group Mafikizolo.
The long-awaited duet between Davido and Meek Mill, titled “Fans Mi,” was released in June 2015 after the Nigerian rapper made his plans to work with Rick Ross and Meek Mill public.
Davido revealed on Twitter in January 2016 that he has secured a record deal with Sony Music. Reactions to his announcement were conflicting. To confirm the agreement, the record label released a press release. Davido created the Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) record label a few months after signing with Sony. At the moment, the label has contracts with Dremo and Mayorkun.
Davido and Sony’s RCA Records inked a record deal in July 2016. In October 2016, he released the five-track EP Son of Mercy, which was followed by the singles “Coolest Kid in Africa,” “How Long,” and “Gbagbe Oshi.” Simi, Tinashe, and Nasty C make appearances on the EP as guests. In April 2017, Davido confessed to Pulse Nigeria that problems with creative autonomy led him to renegotiate his contract with Sony. After revising his contract, he released five songs in 2017, including “If” and “Fall.” The latter became the longest-charting Nigerian pop song in Billboard history, while the former attracted global social media engagement.
