Early Life
Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria, South Africa’s apartheid capital. Maye Musk (née Haldeman), a model and nutritionist born in Saskatchewan, Canada, but reared in South Africa, is his mother. Errol Musk, a South African electromechanical engineer, pilot, sailor, consultant, and property developer, is his father.
He was a half-owner of a Zambian emerald mine near Lake Tanganyika. Kimbal (born 1972), Musk’s younger brother, and Tosca (born 1972), Musk’s younger sister (born 1974). Joshua Haldeman, his maternal grandpa, was an adventurous American-born Canadian who led his family on record-breaking trips to Africa and Australia in a single-engine Bellanca airplane. Musk is of British and Pennsylvania Dutch descent. He was christened in the Anglican Church.
When Musk was younger, his family was affluent. The Musk children allegedly share their father’s distaste for apartheid, as evidenced by the fact that his father was elected to the Pretoria City Council as a member of the anti-apartheid Progressive Party. Musk largely resided with his father after his parents separated in 1980, a decision he made two years after the split he later regretted. Musk and his father are no longer close. He has a half-sister and a half-brother on his paternal side.
Doctors removed Musk’s adenoids as a child because they thought he might be deaf, but his mother ultimately came to the conclusion that he was simply thinking “in another world.” When Musk was 10 years old, he became interested in computers and video games and bought a Commodore VIC-20. He studied computer programming from a handbook and, at the age of 12, sold the source code for Blastar, a BASIC-based video game, to PC and Office Technology magazine for about $500. Before completing his studies at Pretoria Boys High School, he attended Bryanston High School and Waterkloof House Preparatory School.
Career
Elon and his brother Kimbal launched Zip2 when Elon dropped out of Stanford University to pursue entrepreneurship.
Zip2 was a web software business that created and marketed an Internet “city guide” for the newspaper industry. The company obtained contracts from the Chicago Tribune and The New York Times before being sold to Compaq for $307 million.
Musk started the email payment business X.com with the $22 million he now had from the sale of Zip2. This eventually changed when X.com and Confinity joined to form the infamous PayPal.
As the largest provider of online payment services, PayPal was purchased by eBay for $1.5 billion in shares. Musk had just gained $165 million.
Elon Musk began to pursue his goal of improving and enhancing the world for the better at this period, investing in Tesla and launching SpaceX and Solar City.
The success of these three enterprises is increasing month by month, accounting for Musk’s dramatic increase in net worth.
SpaceX is pushing the boundaries of space technology and aims to cut the cost of human travel by a factor of ten.
Tesla is committed to resolving the automobile industry’s fossil fuel issue by manufacturing affordable and beautiful electric vehicles.
Solar City is the United States’ second largest provider of solar power systems.

The twin who no longer wanted to be linked with Musk changed her name formally in 2022 to reflect her gender identity and to take Wilson as her last name.
Musk started dating English actress Talulah Riley in 2008. Two years later, they got married at Scotland’s Dornoch Cathedral. The pair was divorced in 2012 and then got remarried in 2013. Musk and Riley’s second divorce was finalized in 2016 after Musk briefly filed for divorce from Riley in 2014. Then, in 2017, Musk apparently dated Amber Heard for several months after pursuing her since 2012. Later, Johnny Depp claimed that Musk had an affair with Heard while she was still married to Depp. Both Musk and Heard denied their relationship.
