According to Mathew Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, it is unacceptable that Nigerian universities are still closed after such a long period of time.
Speaking on July 13 at the signing of a peace agreement before the Osun State governor election, which will take place on July 16, Kukah said it is sad that the strike has lasted this long, especially since democracy has always provided the people with a platform for negotiation, consensus-building, and other methods of resolving such issues.
Kukah emphasized that Nigeria must understand that the nation’s democracy cannot develop without universities providing opportunities for academic energy, analysis, and theorizing. He also said that at this time, the most crucial thing for political actors to do is to take their responsibilities seriously enough.
