Socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has backed former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu amidst his trial in the United Kingdom over an alleged organ harvesting claim.

The Enugu legislator is being held in the United Kingdom alongside his wife.

Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice, are set to stand trial in Westminster.

They are accused of tricking David Ukpo, a minor, into having his kidney harvested and transferred to their daughter, Sonia.

The couple refutes the allegation, claiming Ukpo is an adult who consented to the surgery.

Chairman of the Ohanaeze Council of Elders, Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, said in a statement on Thursday that they would not abandon Ekweremadu.

The council, according to the elder statesman, defends honest and patriotic citizens whose rights and freedom are violated.

Iwuanyanwu stated that Ekweremadu has been an active member of the group, and that his arrest in London was met with surprise.
