Early Life

Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, a.k.a. Wizkid, was born in Surulere, Lagos, on July 16, 1990. Twelve sister siblings and an interfaith family made up his upbringing. His father follows Islam, but his mother is a Pentecostal Christian. Ijebu Ode Grammar School was where Wizkid studied. He was raised on the music of Bob Marley, Fela Kuti, and King Sunny Ade. He stated “his father has three wives” in a 2012 radio interview with Tim Westwood.

Career

Wizkid mentioned forming the Glorious Five with a few of his church mates in an interview with Adesope of Factory 78 TV. They succeeded in putting out an album before breaking up. Lil Prinz was Wizkid’s stage moniker up until 2006. A record producer named OJB Jezreel (late) whom he later met forbade him from recording for a year. He frequently went to OJB’s Point Beat Studios where he saw 2 Face Idibia work on the tracks for his Grass 2 Grace album.

When he was 15 years old, one of the mentors and coaches he mentioned was Naeto C. Empire Mates Entertainment and Wizkid signed a record deal in 2009. “Omoge You Too Much,” a song from Banky W’s The W Experience album, was co-written by him. Along the way, he collaborated with Naeto C, Ikechukwu, and M.I. Midway through 2009, he left Lagos State University (LASU). Later, he enrolled at Lead City University but left after two sessions.

2009 marked Wizkid’s major break in the music business. This follows a fruitful partnership with renowned musician M.I. The award-winning song “Fast Money,” which was created by the two singers, was played widely on the radio in Nigeria and other African nations in addition to garnering numerous nominations and awards.

He released Holla at Your Boy in 2010. He won the Next Rated prize for the song at the 2011 Headies, where he was also nominated for Best Pop Single. At the 2011 Channel O Music Video Awards, the music video for the same song was nominated for Most Gifted Newcomer Video. Additionally, it was a nominee for the 2011 Nigeria Music Video Awards’ Best Afro Pop Video category (NMVA).

Since then, his music career has developed, and he has had the honor of collaborating with well-known national and international musicians. He has collaborated locally with artists such as Sound Sultan, Naeto C, 2Face Idibia, and award-winning producer OJB, among others.

He has collaborated with artists from other countries including as Drake, Chris Brown, Trey Songz, French Montana, Kranium, Ty Dolla $ign, etc.

Following his cameo appearance on Drake’s afrobeat-infused One Dance track, which peaked at number 21, Wizkid became the first artist from Nigeria to appear on the Billboard Twitter Last 24 hours list of 2016. The song peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 list in May, where it remained for 10 separate weeks.

Family

Wizkid has four children with three different baby mamas. His first-born son, Boluwatife Balogun was born in 2011 by Wizkid’s first baby mama, Shola Ogulu. Binta Diallo, Guinean model gave birth to Wizkid’s second son, Ayo Balogun in 2016. Wizkid did not acknowledge his Ayo, his second son until four years after his birth.
