Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, professionally and popularly known as Ayra Starr, was born in Cotonou, Benin, on June 14, 2002, and raised there as well as in Lagos, Nigeria. She was born to Kwara State, Nigerian parents, and has four siblings. Due to her father’s business, her family relocated frequently during her high school years, which made it difficult for her to make lasting friendships.
Her interest in singing stems primarily from her family because she was reared in a musically inclined household. She started writing songs with her brother when she was just 10 years old and sung in a high school choir. She attended Les Cours Sonou University and graduated with a BA in political science and international relations. She experienced a lot of bullying from her peers during her time in college due of her age and attractiveness. Ayra Starr turned to music as a way to cope with the sentiments she felt as a result of being teased. “I would listen to Nicki Minaj on my way to school, and I’d feel like the second Nicki Minaj.” Her mother always supported Ayra Starr’s desire to pursue a career in music and gave her advice.
Career
Ayra Starr before her breakthrough in music, started out as a model. Ayra Starr joined the Lagos-based modeling agency Quove Models in August 2018. From then, she worked as a model for brands including Esperanza Woman, Complete Fashion Magazine, and Mazelle Studio. In 2019, Ayra Starr started posting music covers of songs performed by Andra Day and legendary 2Face Idibia. According to her, the reason she chose her stage name “Ayra Starr” was because “it means woke and eye-opening and that’s what I stand for.” She made an appearance in the “Dear Future Wife” music video by Eri Ife. In December 2019, Ayra Starr’s fortune changed for good after she posted an original song called “Damage” on her Instagram profile. Numerous individuals, including label owner Don Jazzy, heard the song, which resulted in her signing her first recording deal with Mavin Records.
She began recording in 2020 with producers Louddaaa and Don Jazzy at Mavin Studios in Lagos. The 22nd of January 2021 saw the release of her self-titled debut extended play on Mavin Records. According to reviews, the album “merges elements of R&B/neo-soul with Afropop rhythms” and is “a topsy-turvy chronicle of love or love-themed situations.” Ayra Starr stated that she wanted to create songs for both young and old listeners with this album.
Influences
Ayra Starr was raised in a musically talented household. She attributes her first inspirations for a career in music to her mother, a former singer, and her brother Dami, a guitarist and songwriter. She was exposed to several cultures while growing up between Benin and Nigeria, which had an impact on her outlook on life and personality. Ayra Starr and Dami got their start in songwriting under the guidance of their mother and aunt at a very young age. Since she was ten years old, she had intended to pursue a career in singing, but her father had urged her to finish high school first.
She acknowledged having a wide range of musical influences throughout her upbringing, including 2Face Idibia, Wande Coal, Angélique Kidjo, the Lijadu Sisters, and Tope Alabi, as well as later in college, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber, Sia, and Tiwa Savage. Along with Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Shakira, she named Shakira as her major vocal influence: “It was just the power I would feel listening to their music. We didn’t get a lot of Nigerian female singers singing strongly about things like them, not as we do now.” Lyrically, she admires Aṣa and has said that she “wrote so beautifully [and] was one of one of those people [she] would listen to just to learn how to write properly.”
